Cancelled: Monthly Field Trip

  • Jackson Flat Reservoir Kanab, UT, 84741 United States (map)

Due to a forecasted storm front, we are cancelling the February, 2020 field trip to Kanab. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The storm is expected to hit Kanab about the time we would be scheduled to arrive. Winds will reach 15mph with half-inch of rain expected.

Jackson Flat Reservoir - Kanab

We are going East for this month’s field trip to Jackson Flat Reservoir in Kanab. This reservoir has become an important wintering and migratory stop for dozens of bird species.  Located just south of Kanab, the reservoir has been stocked with several species of fish, adding to the attraction for birds from Bald Eagles to Pied-billed Grebes. Sagebrush and juniper flats surrounding the lake provide additional habitat for raptors, wrens, sparrows and more.  Postings to eBird ( https://ebird.org/hotspot/L3493183 ) have documented 184 species.  A 3-mile paved path around the lake give easy access for birding.

Meeting Place: Meet at the BLM office parking lot (345 E Riverside Dr, St. George) at 7:00am to form up carpools. Or, meet at the Walmart parking lot in Hurricane (180 N 3400 W, Hurricane) at 7:30am. We will then caravan to Kanab. We will again congregate at the parking lot on the south end of the reservoir dam.

Directions to Jackson Flat Parking: As you approach Kanab from the south (traveling north on Hwy 89A), turn east on Kaneplex Drive. After about .3 miles (where the power lines cross the road), turn left onto a dirt road, then bear right to the paved parking lot near the dam.  Note that Google Maps may not show Kaneplex Drive. If you enter “Kane County Water Conservancy” into Google Maps, it will have you turn off Hwy 89A at Kaneplex Drive and then you can follow the above directions to the parking lot.

Special Instructions: Where warm clothing and bring water and lunch. Birding is good along the dam, but better on the east side of the reservoir.  We will start birding along the dam, then caravan to a dirt parking lot on the east side.
